The work produced under Joseph Volmer’s Clearing moniker has, for nearly a decade, made for some of my favorite musical excursions of all time. Since hearing 2011’s Tape Drag on Solid Melts, I’ve been blown away by the ease with which Volmer is able to create such memorable and otherworldly beautiful sounds. It’s no surprise that Themes marks the fifth Clearing cassette on Lillerne since 2014. All the music on this particular collection was recorded straight to hand-cut tape loops. Volmer then layered, mixed, and processed these loops live, and these 15 pieces are the product of this time-consuming effort. The stunning melodies and layers of sparkly ephemera twist and float and warble their way through the warm confines of the humble magnetic tape. I’ll never tire of the distant place and mood that Volmer’s music helps create during a deep listen. I’m thankful to again be able to help toss yet another slab of that remarkable place into the world. Edition of 50 pro-duplicated cassettes.
